Getting Married in Helsingør

Helsingør gives international couples a waterfront wedding town, historic streets and Kronborg Castle within an easy rail journey of Copenhagen. A civil ceremony can be booked after approval, but the date is not secured until Helsingør Municipality sends a confirmation.

The municipality currently provides two witnesses free of charge for ceremonies held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. For Saturday ceremonies, you must bring two witnesses with you.

Why choose Helsingør?

Kronborg Castle, known internationally as Hamlet’s castle, creates a memorable identity for the trip even when the legal ceremony takes place elsewhere in the municipality. The old town’s narrow streets, harbour architecture and views across the sound offer several portrait settings within a compact area.

Helsingør is also practical for guests based in Copenhagen. The direct coastal railway avoids a car, while Sweden is only a short ferry ride away for couples planning a wider Scandinavian journey.

Booking and confirmation

After approval, follow the municipality’s instructions and request an available ceremony date. A request is not a confirmed booking. Wait for the written confirmation before paying for non-refundable transport, accommodation or suppliers.

The municipality’s August 2026 response for this project stated an estimated two-week processing time after all documents are received. This does not include the earlier national approval stage or guarantee the couple’s first-choice date.

Availability update: Checked on 26 August 2026, the earliest available wedding dates in Helsingør are in mid-November 2026. Availability may change, and your date is not guaranteed until the ceremony has been confirmed.

Plan a Helsingør wedding day

Use the old town and harbour for portraits, visit Kronborg’s courtyards, or book lunch near the Culture Yard. The Danish Museum of Science and Technology and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in nearby Humlebæk can extend the trip. Kronborg is a separate attraction and should not be presented as the legal ceremony venue unless it has been specifically booked and approved.

Getting to Helsingør Town Hall

From Copenhagen Central Station: Direct coastal trains run frequently and take about 40–50 minutes. The Town Hall is a short walk from Helsingør Station.

From Copenhagen Airport: Take the train through Copenhagen and continue north. Allow approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on the connection.

By car from Copenhagen Airport: Helsingør is approximately 54 kilometres away and normally takes 45–60 minutes.

From Sweden: The passenger and car ferry between Helsingborg and Helsingør takes about 20 minutes. The Danish ferry terminal and Town Hall are both in the city centre.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wedding booked when we request a date?

No. The date is secured only when Helsingør Municipality confirms it.

Can we get married at Kronborg Castle?

Do not assume so. Kronborg is a major attraction and portrait setting, but any legal ceremony there would require a separate approved arrangement.

How long is the train from Copenhagen?

The direct journey is generally a little under an hour. Check the live timetable and arrive in Helsingør with enough margin for delays.

Can we visit Sweden on the same trip?

Yes, ferries connect Helsingør and Helsingborg. do not let a tight ferry connection put the ceremony at risk.
