1. Who can get married in Copenhagen?
Almost all couples—regardless of nationality, religion, gender, or residence—can get legally married in Denmark. Copenhagen is known for its fast, simple, and internationally recognized marriage process.
2. What documents do we need?
Typically, you will need:
- Passports or national EU ID
- Proof of legal residence in your current country (if applicable)
- Proof that you legally reside together

3. How long does the process take?
Once your documents are submitted, approval usually takes 5 days to a couple of weeks. We help speed up the process by ensuring everything is correct before sending.

5. Do we need to stay in Copenhagen for a minimum number of days?
Generally, couples only need to be in Copenhagen one day before the ceremony for ID checks, unless otherwise required. Many couples make it a short wedding getaway.
6. Where can the ceremony take place?
Most couples choose Copenhagen City Hall due to its historic charm and beautiful architecture, making it one of the most popular wedding locations in Denmark.
However, you are free to choose from city halls all across Denmark, depending on your preferences. Whether you prefer a vibrant city setting or a quieter, more intimate location, there are many options to suit your wishes.
7. Is the marriage certificate valid internationally?
Yes. Denmark’s marriage certificates are internationally recognized. If your country requires an apostille or legalization, we can assist with that too.
8. Can we bring guests or witnesses?
Yes. You’re welcome to bring guests. If you do not have witnesses, the City Hall will provide them for you at no additional cost.
9. Is it possible to get married in Denmark on a tourist visa?
Yes, it is absolutely possible to get married in Denmark on a tourist visa.
You do not need to live in Denmark or be a Danish resident to get married here. Unlike many other countries, Denmark allows foreign couples to marry without residency requirements.
Whether you are visiting on a tourist visa, a residence permit, or visa-free entry, you can get married in Denmark as long as you have entered the country legally.
10. Is a Single Status Certificate necessary?
A Single Status Certificate (also known as a Marital Status Certificate) may have different names depending on the country. For example, in the UK it is called a Certificate of No Impediment, and in Germany a Ledigkeitsbescheinigung.
In almost all cases, this document is not required to get married in Denmark.

12. What language is the wedding ceremony performed in?
Weddings in Denmark are conducted in your choice of English, Danish or German.
It’s a legal requirement that you both understand the language you choose your ceremony to be conducted in. If this isn’t the case, you will need to bring a translator.
A translator can be anyone who speaks the language and can communicate the meaning to you. This could be a friend, a family member, a witness, a professional or even the photographer.
13. Is marriage certificate from Denmark Recognised in Germany?
Marriage conducted in Denmark is recognized worldwide and immediately recognized in Germany. According to the bilateral agreement made between Denmark and Germany, Danish marriage certificate do not need additional legalization. Only in case one of the partners needs to come back to the non-EU home country and prepare the documents for the family reunion, legalization through the Apostil might be needed.
