Apostille for a Danish Marriage Certificate
After getting married in Denmark, you may need to present the marriage certificate to an authority in another country. That authority may ask for an apostille before it will register or use the document.
Not every country or purpose requires one. The correct first step is always to ask the receiving civil registry, immigration authority, employer, court or other institution exactly which certificate format and authentication it accepts.
What Is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official confirmation that a public document originates from the stated issuing authority. For a Danish marriage certificate, the apostille verifies the Danish public document and its origin; it does not verify every statement in the certificate or decide how foreign law treats the marriage.
Apostilles are used between countries that participate in the Hague Apostille Convention. If the receiving country is not part of the Convention, additional legalisation through its embassy or consular representation may be required.
Do We Need an Apostille?
You may need an apostille when registering the marriage abroad, changing a civil-status record, applying for immigration or using the certificate in another official process. Requirements differ by country and authority.
Within the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 exempts certain public documents, including marriage certificates, from legalisation when they are presented to a public authority in another EU member state. Translation rules and the precise use of the document can still vary, so confirm the requirement rather than assuming.
Before and After the Wedding: Two Different Apostilles
Foreign Documents Used in the Danish Application
A divorce decree, death certificate or other document issued outside Denmark may need an apostille before the marriage application. That apostille must be issued by the competent authority in the country that issued the document. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot apostille a foreign document.
The Danish Marriage Certificate Used Abroad
After the ceremony, an eligible Danish marriage certificate can be apostilled by the Legalisation Office of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the apostille most couples mean when they ask about using their Danish marriage certificate abroad.

How to Obtain an Apostille in Denmark
• Ask the receiving authority whether it needs an apostille, a physical certificate, a translation or additional embassy legalisation.
• Obtain the marriage certificate from the municipality that registered the civil wedding.
• Purchase legalisation through the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs webshop before submitting or forwarding the document.
• Submit the document through an accepted route: direct forwarding from Digital Post, upload of a document with a certified digital signature, personal attendance with an original wet-signed document, or physical mail or courier.
• Receive the apostilled document in the format accepted by the receiving authority and arrange any required translation or further legalisation.
Official Apostille Fee and Processing Time
The official Danish fee is DKK 250 (35 Euro) per document in 2026. Return postage or courier costs are separate.
An eligible physical document presented in person may be legalised while you wait. Documents sent by mail or courier have an official processing estimate of five to seven working days after the Legalisation Office receives them, and busy periods or delivery can add time. Requests involving more than seven documents may not be completed on the same day.
Common Apostille Mistakes
• Ordering an apostille before checking whether the receiving authority requires it.
• Trying to apostille a scan or printout of a wet-signed original.
• Uploading a PDF that does not contain a certified digital signature.
• Asking Denmark to apostille a document issued in another country.
• Forgetting that the apostille and all stamps may also need translation.
