Getting married at Fanø Town Hall
Town Hall ceremonies take place in the Council Chamber or, when the weather allows, in the courtyard. Fanø currently schedules these weddings on the third Saturday of each month. There is no additional municipal ceremony fee for a Town Hall wedding on the published dates, and the municipality can make witnesses available if you request them in advance.
The registrar conducts the official ceremony with a short wedding speech. There is time to exchange rings and take photographs, and the ceremony ends with presentation of the marriage certificate. Rice, confetti and artificial flowers may not be thrown inside or in front of Town Hall.

The Old Navigation School
The Old Navigation School gives couples a more historic maritime setting in Nordby, inside the building where generations of sailors trained. Ceremonies are offered on selected Saturdays rather than every week. Couples must bring two witnesses.
There are several steps at and inside the entrance, but a wheelchair ramp and an alternative entrance are available. Contact the wedding office in advance if step-free access is required. Parking is shared with the nearby health centre, and further parking is available near the ferry area. Couples may bring a drink for after the ceremony, but must also bring their own glasses and leave the room tidy.

A beach wedding or another special place on Fanø
Fanø Municipality can also perform the legal ceremony at an agreed location on the island. Published examples include Fanø Bad beach, Rindby Beach, Kikkebjerg, the Maritime Bridge, Børsen in Sønderho, a private garden, a home on Fanø or a holiday home. The registrar meets the couple at the agreed place and conducts the same official civil ceremony.
For an off-site ceremony, the couple must provide two witnesses. An additional charge applies for the registrar's time and travel. The municipality currently lists indicative charges of 50 Euro for Nordby and 95 Euro for Fanø Bad, Rindby or Sønderho. Confirm the exact amount and payment instructions with the Marriage Office before the ceremony.
Wind and rain can change quickly on the west coast, so every outdoor plan should have an indoor backup. Rice, confetti, artificial flowers and balloon releases are not permitted in Fanø's natural areas.
Booking, documents and the wedding day
Before you apply, review the documents needed to get married in Denmark. Once your case is approved, follow Fanø Municipality's booking instructions and wait for written confirmation of the date, time, venue, language and witnesses. How to get to Fanø
Every journey to Fanø finishes with the Fanølinjen ferry from Esbjerg to Nordby. The crossing takes just under 12 minutes. Foot passengers can buy a ticket at the terminal, and advance booking is available. If travelling with a car, allow additional time for check-in and seasonal queues. From Germany by car
From Hamburg, drive north on the A7/E45 into Denmark and continue west towards Esbjerg, normally via the E20 from the Kolding area. Esbjerg is about 267 km by road from Hamburg; allow roughly three to three and a half hours before breaks, traffic and ferry check-in. From Flensburg, the drive to Esbjerg is about 113 km and usually around one hour and forty minutes. Cars can travel on the Fanø ferry, which is useful if your ceremony or accommodation is outside Nordby.
From Germany by train
Rail passengers can travel from Hamburg or Flensburg towards Esbjerg, normally changing at Kolding or another Danish station depending on the service. Hamburg to Esbjerg is commonly around four to five and a half hours; Flensburg to Esbjerg is normally around two hours. From Esbjerg Station, take a local bus or taxi to the ferry terminal, or allow about 15-20 minutes to walk. Continue on the ferry to Nordby and check the live timetable for every connection.
From Copenhagen and other countries
From Copenhagen Central Station, DSB trains reach Esbjerg in roughly two hours and forty minutes to three hours, depending on the departure. From Copenhagen Airport, first connect to Copenhagen Central Station or use the itinerary shown in the live journey planner. Add time for the transfer between Esbjerg Station and the ferry terminal, the crossing and your onward journey on Fanø.
Billund Airport is the closest major international airport. It is about 61 km by road from Esbjerg, usually around 50 minutes by car, and direct regional buses generally take about one hour and twenty-five minutes. From Esbjerg, continue to the ferry terminal and sail to Nordby.
Getting around Fanø
Nordby is compact, so a Town Hall wedding can work without a car. Local buses connect the ferry area with Fanø Bad, Rindby and Sønderho, but not every ferry has a matching bus. A taxi, bicycle or car gives more flexibility for beach ceremonies, photographs and accommodation farther south. Build extra time into the wedding-day plan rather than relying on the final practical connection.
