Plan to present the requested original passports and travel documents according to the municipality’s instructions. For many international bookings, registration takes place during a set time on the working day before the wedding. A Friday or Saturday ceremony can therefore require arrival by Thursday.
Witnesses and ceremony locations
The municipality normally provides witnesses for a civil ceremony, which makes Ærø practical for an elopement. Confirm this for the exact venue and date, especially if choosing a ceremony away from the municipal setting.

Getting to Ærø
Via Svendborg from Copenhagen: Travel by train to Svendborg, normally with a change in Odense. The rail journey is about 2–2.5 hours. The ferry from Svendborg to Ærøskøbing takes approximately 75 minutes. Allow about 3.5–4.5 hours overall, plus ferry check-in time.
By car via Svendborg: Copenhagen to Svendborg is roughly 195 kilometres and usually takes about 2 hours. Cars can travel on the ferry, but vehicle reservations are strongly recommended.
Via Fynshav from Germany: Hamburg to Fynshav is approximately 210 kilometres and around 2–2.5 hours by car. The Fynshav–Søby ferry takes about 60 minutes. Søby is around 15 kilometres from Ærøskøbing, normally 20–30 minutes by car or island bus.
Via Faaborg: The ferry from Faaborg to Søby takes about one hour and can be practical when travelling across Funen.
On the island: The public bus is free. Services are limited compared with a city network, so check connections against the ferry timetable.
