Is a Danish Marriage Certificate Recognised Abroad?

A marriage validly performed in Denmark is documented by the Danish marriage certificate. Whether you must register, apostille or translate that certificate later depends on the country, authority and purpose for which you will use it.

There is no single worldwide registration step. A passport office, immigration authority, employer, bank and civil registry can ask for different formats even within the same country.

The three questions to ask after the wedding

1.    Which authority will receive the certificate?

2.    Does it require the original, a certified copy or a newly issued copy?

3.    Does it require an apostille, translation or local registration?

Ask the receiving authority before sending the certificate away. This prevents you from paying for the wrong version or discovering that a scan is not accepted.

What an apostille does

An apostille confirms that a public document originates from the named Danish authority. It does not change the content of the marriage certificate and does not, by itself, decide how another country records the marriage.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the authority that apostilles Danish public documents. The current fee is DKK 250 per document, and handling depends on whether the certificate has a certified digital signature, arrives through Danish Digital Post or carries a physical signature.

Follow the current procedure in our apostille guide for Danish marriage certificates.

When is an apostille commonly requested?

Recording the marriage in a foreign civil registry.

Changing a surname or updating a passport.

Applying for a spouse visa or residence permit.

Using the marriage certificate in a court, inheritance or pension matter.

Providing official marital-status evidence to another public authority.

These are examples, not a universal rule. Some authorities accept the multilingual certificate without an apostille; others specify a particular physical or electronic form.

Countries in and outside the Apostille Convention

An apostille is designed for countries participating in the Hague Apostille Convention. If the destination country is not covered, further legalisation by that country’s diplomatic representation may be required.

Even within a Convention country, ask the receiving office whether it accepts an electronic apostille or needs a physically stamped document.

Using the certificate in the United States

The US Department of State explains that recognition of a foreign marriage is governed by the relevant US law and advises couples to contact the Attorney General’s office in their state about documentation. There is no general need to create a second wedding through a US embassy.

For a surname change, immigration case or state record, the receiving agency may want a certified certificate and apostille. Ask that agency for its current checklist.

Using the certificate in India

India and Denmark participate in the Apostille Convention. Indian authorities may accept a Danish public document apostilled by Denmark, but the exact procedure still depends on the receiving office and purpose. A passport, OCI, immigration or local civil process may apply its own checklist.

If an English translation is requested, confirm whether the multilingual Danish certificate is already acceptable or whether an authorised translation is needed.

The international marriage certificate

Danish municipalities commonly issue an international certificate with several languages. This can reduce translation needs, but it does not replace an apostille when the receiving authority requires authentication.

Check names, dates and places immediately after the ceremony. If anything is wrong, contact the issuing municipality before starting a foreign registration or apostille process.

A practical after-wedding checklist

Check every detail on the certificate before leaving the municipality.

Store a clear scan separately from the original.

Ask the receiving authority for written requirements.

Order an apostille only in the format the authority accepts.

Arrange translation after confirming which language and certification are required.

Keep receipts, tracking numbers and certified copies.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Danish marriage certificate need an apostille?

No. The need depends on where and why the certificate will be used.

Can the municipality apostille the certificate?

The municipality issues the marriage certificate. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs handles the Danish apostille.

Should we apostille both certificates?

Ask the receiving authority how many originals or certified copies it needs. An apostille is charged per document.

Does an apostille guarantee registration abroad?

No. It authenticates the document’s origin. The receiving country applies its own rules for recognition and registration.
