How to Prove a Genuine Relationship for a Denmark Marriage Application

The Danish Agency of Family Law may ask international couples about their relationship because marriages entered only to obtain residence rights are prohibited. This does not mean every couple must upload a large photo album with the initial application.
The official guidance states that couple photographs are not a universal requirement. If the information already provided does not document the relationship sufficiently, the Agency may ask for unedited photos, further information or an interview.
What the Agency may ask
• How and when you first met.
• When you became a couple.
• How often you meet and communicate.
• Which language you use together.
• Whether you live together or have lived together.
• Whether you have children together.
• Your travel and visits during the relationship.
The exact questions depend on the couple’s answers and circumstances. Two partners can remember minor details differently, but the central timeline should be truthful and coherent.
When evidence is requested, think in timelines
A useful evidence file lets a reviewer understand the relationship in a few minutes. Arrange material from the beginning of contact to the present and label key periods clearly.
• A small selection of unedited photographs from different dates and places.
• Representative messages or call records showing contact over time.
• Tickets, boarding passes or reservations for visits made to see each other.
• Residence records, leases or official mail if you share a home.
• Birth certificates for children you have together.
• A short factual statement explaining how the relationship developed.
Evidence should support the answer, not overwhelm it. Ten well-chosen, dated items can be clearer than hundreds of screenshots with no explanation.
How to select photographs
Choose images that show different periods, real-life contexts and, where relevant, time with friends or family. Keep the original date information where possible. Do not edit the content to make the relationship appear different from reality.
Avoid sending intimate images or private material that adds no factual value. Relationship evidence can be both sufficient and proportionate.
How to use messages without uploading your entire life
Select samples from meaningful intervals rather than every conversation. Make the date, participants and platform visible. If messages are not in Danish, English or German, consider whether a short authorised translation or explanatory index is needed.
Do not create conversations after the fact or remove context that changes their meaning. False or misleading information can have legal consequences.
Long-distance relationships
A long-distance relationship is not automatically a problem. Explain the practical pattern: how you met, how often you communicate, which trips you have made and how you plan time together. Travel records and a simple chronology can connect these facts.
Couples who live together
If you live together outside Denmark, the current application preparation list asks for a residence certificate or similar evidence. The document must be provided in its original language and, when necessary, in an authorised Danish, English or German translation.
Five mistakes that weaken a genuine case
• Partners give different dates for the first meeting or start of the relationship without explanation.
• The file contains only recent photographs even though the relationship is described as long-term.
• Screenshots have no visible dates, names or context.
• The couple uploads a huge unsorted archive and leaves the reviewer to reconstruct the story.
• An applicant guesses an exact date instead of honestly explaining that only the month or period is remembered.

A simple evidence index
1. Write a one-page timeline with the key relationship dates.
2. Number each supporting item.
3. Give each item a short label, date and reason for inclusion.
4. Keep names, dates and locations consistent with the application.
5. Remove duplicates and irrelevant private material.
Will evidence guarantee approval?
No document package can guarantee a decision. The Agency assesses the complete case and may ask questions or invite the couple to an interview. Clear, truthful evidence helps the authority understand the relationship; it does not replace any other marriage condition.
