Can You Get Married in Denmark in One Day?
Share
A Danish civil ceremony can take place in one day, but the complete legal process cannot realistically begin and end that day. Marriage approval and the municipality booking must normally be completed before you travel.
The useful question is therefore not “Can everything happen in one day?” but “Can our time in the wedding location be limited to one day after everything is confirmed?” Sometimes yes—if the municipality’s identity-check rules and your transport make it safe.
What must happen before the wedding trip
1. Both partners must meet the Danish marriage conditions.
2. The correct authority must receive a complete application, both partners’ signatures and the fee.
3. The Certificate of Marital Status must be issued.
4. The municipality must confirm a ceremony date and time.
5. Both partners must have valid travel documents and a lawful basis for entering and staying in Denmark.
Our step-by-step guide explains the full process that sits behind the short ceremony.
Why a same-day arrival is risky
A delayed flight, cancelled train or missed ferry can cause you to miss the ceremony. Some municipalities also require an original-document or identity check on an earlier working day. Others ask only that you arrive shortly before the appointment.
The safest short itinerary usually includes arrival the day before the wedding and departure after the ceremony or the following morning. This is especially important for island locations or Saturday ceremonies.
When a one-day location visit may work
• The approval and ceremony are already confirmed in writing.
• The municipality does not require an earlier identity check.
• Both partners can arrive with a generous transport buffer.
• The original passports or accepted identity cards are ready.
• Witness arrangements and ceremony language are confirmed.
• Your lawful stay remains valid throughout the trip.
Approval time is not the whole timeline
For a complete application, the Agency states a general expectation of five working days. That is not a promise that every case will be approved within five days, and it does not include collecting documents, translations, apostilles, a request for more information or waiting for a ceremony date.
Use the Denmark wedding timeline to estimate the complete journey rather than counting only the national review.
Choosing a location for a short trip
Copenhagen City Hall offers the simplest international transport for many couples, but popular appointments can require flexibility. Stevns can suit a coastal trip from the Copenhagen region. Ærø and Fanø are romantic destinations, but ferry schedules make at least one overnight stay the sensible plan.

A realistic two-night itinerary
• Day 1: Arrive, check in and complete any required identity check.
• Day 2: Attend the ceremony, take photographs and celebrate without watching the departure clock.
• Day 3: Travel home or continue the trip; begin any planned apostille process.
This small buffer protects the wedding from ordinary travel disruption while keeping the trip compact.
Can we apply while already in Denmark?
You may be able to submit while legally present, but the approval and booking still take time. Your visa or visa-free allowance must remain valid, and a last-minute application does not create a same-day municipality appointment.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the ceremony take?
A civil ceremony is usually brief, but arrival, document checks, guests and photographs add time. Follow the municipality’s confirmation.
Can we fly in and out on the wedding day?
It may be technically possible for some routes, but it creates a high risk of missing the appointment. An overnight buffer is usually the better plan.
Can we pay for an emergency appointment?
Municipality options and fees vary. Do not assume a paid service can override the legal approval or create availability that the municipality has not confirmed.
