Can Americans Get Married in Denmark?

Yes. US citizens can get married in Denmark whether both partners are American or one partner has another nationality. You do not normally need Danish residence, but you must obtain marriage approval and be able to enter and stay in Denmark legally for the wedding.

Nationality is only one part of the assessment. The document list also depends on where each partner lives, previous marriages, shared children and the other partner’s nationality and travel status.

Why American couples choose Denmark

Denmark offers a civil process designed around one national legal assessment followed by a ceremony at a municipality. For couples living in different countries, that can be easier to plan than a system that requires long local residence or several in-person visits.

The process is clear, but it is not automatic. A strong application still needs complete passport images, consistent personal information and the correct evidence for any previous marriage.

What American applicants usually prepare

•    A valid US passport, photographed in colour on every page, including blank pages and both covers.

•    Evidence of lawful entry and stay in Denmark or Schengen, including the current post-EES evidence where applicable.

•    A residence certificate if the couple lives together outside Denmark.

•    A final divorce decree, death certificate or annulment record if either partner was previously married.

•    Birth certificates for children the couple has together, if applicable.

•    Relationship information or evidence if requested by the application or later by the Agency.

Do US documents need an apostille for the Danish application?

The Danish Agency of Family Law currently states that documents from the United States typically do not need an apostille or additional legalisation to be accepted in Denmark. That does not remove the need for a complete, final and readable document, and the Agency can still request further verification in an individual case.

This rule concerns foreign documents being used in the Danish application. It is different from obtaining an apostille on the Danish marriage certificate for later use in the United States or another country.

The application and booking sequence

1.    Build your personal file using the required documents guide.

2.    Complete both partners’ parts of the Denmark marriage application and pay the official fee.

3.    Receive the Certificate of Marital Status. It is normally valid for no more than four months and may be shorter if a travel document or basis for stay expires earlier.

4.    Choose and book an available municipality. Use the wedding location comparison if you need a date outside Copenhagen.

5.    Travel with the original identity documents and complete any municipality check required before the ceremony.

Can an American marry a non-American in Denmark?

Yes. The partners do not need to share a nationality. However, the non-American partner may have different visa, legal-stay, translation, apostille or legalisation requirements. Prepare the application as one connected case, not as two separate nationality checklists.

Choosing the town hall

Copenhagen City Hall is convenient for flights from the United States and for guests arriving from several countries, but popular dates can be booked months ahead. Island and coastal locations such as Ærø, Stevns and Fanø can offer a more intimate destination-wedding experience.

Compare more than appearance. Check ceremony days, travel time, witnesses, languages, accessibility, guest limits and whether an identity check is required on a prior working day.

Will the United States recognise a Danish marriage?

A marriage validly performed in Denmark is documented by the Danish marriage certificate, but the procedure for using or recording that certificate in the United States is decided by the relevant state or authority. The US Department of State advises couples to ask the Attorney General’s office in their state about recognition and documentation.

•    Ordering a birth certificate or single-status affidavit before checking whether it is actually requested.

•    Assuming that a US divorce record is sufficient even when it does not show that the divorce is final.

•    Buying flights based on the Agency’s processing guideline before a municipality has confirmed the ceremony.

•    Confusing visa-free travel with unlimited time in Schengen.

•    Requesting an apostille for the wrong document or before asking the receiving US authority what it accepts.

Do Americans need a certificate of no impediment?

It is not listed as a universal document for every US applicant in the current Danish application guidance. The Agency may request additional evidence based on the individual case.

Can two Americans marry in Denmark?

Do we have to register the marriage at a US embassy?

US embassies do not create the Danish marriage record. Ask the authority that will use the certificate in your state whether a separate record, certified copy or apostille is needed.
