Required Documents for Getting Married in Denmark
The documents required to get married in Denmark depend on your personal situation, nationality, and the country that issued your documents.
At Copenhagen Weddings, we guide you through the full process and make sure your documents meet Danish legal requirements.

Documents You Will Need
Valid Passport or EU ID Card
All couples must provide valid identification.
- A valid passport is accepted for all nationalities.
- Citizens of the EU or Schengen Area (except Ireland) may use a valid national ID card instead of a passport.
Both partners must present valid ID to enter Denmark, stay legally, and marry.
Signed Declaration of Truth
This is an official legal form required by the Danish authorities.
By signing it, both partners confirm that:
- All information in the application is correct
- All submitted documents are genuine
We provide this form and guide you through completing it correctly.
Documents You May Need
Depending on your circumstances, you may also need:
- Visa or residence permit
- Final divorce decree (if previously divorced)
- Death certificate of former spouse (if widowed)
- Child’s birth certificate (if you have children together)
- Declaration under Section 11b of the Danish Marriage Act (if one partner lives in Denmark or is a Danish citizen)
- Proof of address (rental contract, utility bill, etc.)
- Military orders / Commander’s letter (if serving in the military in a Schengen country)
- Additional supporting documents based on your case

Accepted proof may include:
- Valid visa (including tourist visa)
- Danish residence permit
- Danish EU registration certificate
- Residence permit from another Schengen country
- Valid passport
- Proof of Nordic or EU citizenship

Passport Requirements for Non-EU / Non-EEA Citizens
If you are from outside the EU/EEA, your passport or travel document must meet these rules:
- Valid for at least 3 months after your planned stay
- At least 2 blank pages
- Issued within the last 10 years
If your passport expires soon, the validity of your Certificate of Marital Status may be shortened.
Passport Copy Requirements
You must provide:
- Clear colour photos of all passport pages, including blank pages, front cover, and back cover
OR
- For EU citizens: clear colour photos of both sides of your ID card
If You Have Children Together
If you have joint children, you must provide:
- Birth certificate(s) for the child(ren)
These documents confirm your parental relationship and support your application.
Certificates must be submitted in:

- Plus translation into English, German, or Danish
If Previously Married
If one of you has been married before, you must provide proof that the marriage has legally ended.
Accepted documents include:
- Divorce decree
- Death certificate
- Court judgment annulling the marriage
All documents must be officially issued and, if necessary:
- Translated into English, German, or Danish
- Apostilled or legalized depending on the country of issue
Residence Permit
If one or both partners are non-EU citizens living in an EU or Schengen country, a valid residence permit is usually required.
You may also need:
- Certificate of residence
- Joint address documentation
Documents must be submitted in the original language plus translation into English, German, or Danish.
At Copenhagen Weddings, we ensure your documents are prepared correctly to avoid delays or rejection.
Additional Relationship Documentation
In some cases, Danish authorities may ask for extra proof that your relationship is genuine.
This may include:
- How long you have known each other
- How your relationship developed
- Communication history
- Time spent together
Examples:
- Photos together with visible dates
- Screenshots of chats over time
- Travel bookings or tickets
- Social media posts
- Shared event confirmations
We help you prepare this documentation professionally.
Translation & Legalization Requirements
When applying for a Certificate of Marital Status:
- Foreign documents may need an apostille or legalization
- All documents must be translated into Danish, English, or German

Documents from these countries are often accepted without further legalization:
- United States

- Use colour photos only
- Photograph from directly above
- Use even lighting
- Avoid glare, shadows, and reflections
- Ensure images are sharp and readable
